Emotion Pen Stage 2

On October 22nd we decided to test some ideas for this project. The questions we asked were, How can we test this in a low tech way and will our ideas survive the experiment. Our pen needs to be able to change color and smell of the ink depending on the users “emotional state”, so first we decided to experiment with different scents. We brought in a package of glade scented oils. We also brought in some natural materials for both color and smell, beer, wine, soap, peppers, die, cinnamon sticks, energy drinks, etc. For the colors category we had acrylic and watercolor paints. The results proved to be very interesting. The Glade plugins had an very intense smell even if the smallest amount was entered into any of a small cup of liquids. The organic products we used had some interesting results also. We mixed a variety of different things in the cups and painted using a variety of paint brushes onto card-stock paper.
The experiments stayed in bag for the weekend. At the time of presenting, the scents were pretty much gone. This was important because, if this was an installation, we know that we could not leave the results up for too long. If we were to move forward and have the values dictated from the pen to a machine that pumps the ink to the pen, we would also have to worry about viscosity issues.
