Android 2.2

The new android 2.2 operating system shows off some fancy features. However, many android powered phones will not get this update as seen from the 2.0 release. What is the point of this blazing fast updates to the OS, if most devices are still running android 1.6 and 1.5, which are currently 2-3 versions behind.

Here is a chart from Tech Crunch May 3,2010
The carriers don’t care wether users have the newest operating system, since they are more interesting in selling phone plans and phones. Google has updated the Android OS several times, but they are still missing the some key points why Iphone is and will remain successful.
1. Updates
Apple uses itunes for its updates. Iphone users are instantly notified once there is an update for their device.
2. Usability
A clean and intuitive user design will enhance the experience of any digital device, more than the features they. Apple proved this with the first iphone, which lacked an impressive camera, am fm tuner, 3g speeds, video recording, and terrible battery life. Despite the lack in features, the Iphone still sold like hot cakes.
3. Marketing/Branding
I am currently a Grad Student at Parsons The New School for Design, majoring in design and technology. Most of my classmates have no idea what Android is, and this is a design and tech school which focuses on mainly on social research, programming and interactive design. Is it there faults for not knowing, yeah a little bit. However everyone, even a guy who lives under a rock knows what an Iphone is or the terms that accompany the product OS4, 3.1.3, 2.1, mobile me etc. Which leads to point number 4.
4. Apple stands behind its products, by designing and developing most of its components down the chipset and batteries. Google doesn’t even have a list of phones and carriers on their android.com site. I guess google only cares about the developers and phone manufacturers. However, at the end of the day who will be using the phones? Oh wait, here is a direct quote from the Android mission statement “The goal of the Android Open Source Project is to create a successful real-world product that improves the mobile experience for end users.” Yet they ignored the important issues that make for a rich user experience.
